You may have heard that the gut has its own ‘brain’ called the enteric nervous system. The gut’s brain is situated in the tissue lining the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon. It sends and receives impulses, records experiences and respond to emotions.

That’s why stress, anxiety and depression can play havoc with your stomach and bowels, such as experiencing butterflies or feeling nauseous when stressed, or having diarrhoea when anxiety kicks in.

Sometimes the signals between the brain and gut become scrambled or misinterpreted; the gut can upset the brain just as the brain can upset the gut.

In IBS ( Irritable Bowel Syndrome ) the nerves in the gut are oversensitive; you may have been advised to reduce foods that are classed as FODMAP. These foods can cause bloating and put pressure on the sensitive nerves in your gut leading to pain after eating.

How can hypnotherapy help me?

Hypnotherapy can help calm the whole nervous system by helping to address the mixed messages the body is relaying from gut to brain in a dysfunctional loop. Hypnotherapy can also address other issues that could be compounding the problems, such as low self-esteem, depression and anxiety.
