Anger management is easier said than done. Anger is seen as an emotion that is wrong and you should learn a different way to express it. However anger is an emotion that comes up automatically, like when you put your hand on a hot kettle, your body responds without you thinking about it.
And thank goodness it does, in fact a lot of our behaviours are automatic and are difficult to control, anger is no exception.
Intense anger or rage is destructive, and nobody likes that! However after the explosion comes remorse, regret and guilt. This adds another layer of problems.
If you are the sort of person to hold it in and walk away when you feel angry at someone, then you may find that you are still seething and ruminating about the issue days later and can’t get it out of your mind. Suppressing anger is a problem, because it will build up. You may expressive passive aggressive behaviour, you know snarky comments and hurtful digs… and that’s not good either.
Anger management techniques may assist with your ability to express yourself calmly but for most people it’s a long hard road. Addressing the issues behind the anger is often the real road to recovery.
Repressing emotions leads to a build up of stress and can lead to depression, anxiety, addictions and a whole range of issues including physical ailments such irritable bowels, migraines, muscle tension, back ache, chronic pain.. autoimmune conditions…the list goes on.
As you can see from the image, the anger expressed is only the tip of the iceberg as to what is going on underneath. Healing old wounds and dealing with the root cause leads to the anger dissipating naturally.
How would you like to feel empowered and assertive so you can express yourself calmly without having to try and manage your anger?
